2013 Chairman's Short Answer responses

1. Impact on Team Members

Team 1912 creates active STEM leaders with political awareness, community service, and entrepreneurial spirit. 100% pursue college with 77% in STEM majors, and 1912 boasts 1 Dean's List winner and 3 finalists. Summer classes in animation, website, and CAD prepare future engineers, who enjoy off-season STEM activities in Beta-Testing, robot builds, and Zero Robotics' SPHERES. 1912ers can earn varsity letters. Our website tracks alumni as they apply the FIRST experience for a smarter future.

2. Role Model Characteristics

In the spirit of FIRST, 1912's Ignition Team founded 5 JrFLL teams, while obtaining funds for 1 FRC and 3 FLL teams. This year, we mentored 5 JrFLL, 2 FLL and 2 FRC teams, sparking a FIRST progression of programs. After hosting an FLL District Qualifier, 1912 volunteered at FLL's State Competition. We organized and ran the JrFLL State Expo as reviewers, bestowing awards on our bright protégés for the first time. By stepping up within FIRST, we inspire as mentors and leaders from JrFLL to FRC.

3. Impact on Community

1912 excites youth about STEM at 5 camps, the Boys and Girls Club in Yazoo City, and College and Career Night. We inspired kids as Rocket and Science Camp counselors, and Rocket Camp planners. From the AARP Convention to Girl and Boy Scouts expos, 1912 proves that FIRST is truly for all. We nurture our community with 8 city cleanups and 3 bayou restorations while donating to St. Jude's, Kevin Tremble, and SWCC's holiday gift drive. With state legislators and educators, we aim for real change.

4. Innovative Methods to Spread FIRST

To tie FIRST into local heritage, 1912 sparks loud crowds at crawfish cookoffs, Mardi Gras and Veterans Day parades, July 4th fests, a shopping mall, and a Hornets game. Demo bot PEDRO is a hit with all ages, launching T-shirts at pep rallies, parades, and District and State FLL. We discussed STEM education with Gov. Jindal, state, parish, PTA, school board, and city lawmakers to advocate political reform. Year-round volunteering, networking, demos, and mentoring keep FIRST on everyone's minds.

5. Strength of Partnership

Our FIRST partnerships thrive with sponsor visits, Take Your Kid to Work Days, luncheons, and thank- you plaques. Jumpstart aided 7 FRC teams, and we bonded with FRC teams at NI training. Mentor lunches and plaques show our love, while 1912 alumni forge new connections by mentoring teams. Organizations like the Slidell Women's Civic Club and Keep Slidell Beautiful call us back to camps and festivals. With social media and demos, 1912 keeps all friendships strong as we continue sparking new ones.

6. Communication Methods

1912 refreshes sponsors with triannual newsletters, commemorative plaques, and personal visits while staying in touch with the local community via partnerships with newspaper columns. To engage our school, we update our FIRST bulletin board and demo PEDRO at pep rallies and Club Days. For the FIRST community, we run Bayou and Razorback webcasts. We extensively use social media and our website keeps contact with alumni while our students reach out to new friends through demos and events.

7. Other Considerations

At the National WWII Museum we planned the 2013 Robotics Challenge and will support the Louisiana Technology Council black-tie dinner with a student speaker and demo. We honored National Engineers Week with a demo for the New Orleans Chapter of the Louisiana Engineering Society. We created a Booster club, raffled paintings, and channeled proceeds from our school's annual fundraiser to a teacher's ill spouse. We celebrate annually with team pool parties and host regional FRC paintball outings.
